Right-of-way rules determine who goes first at intersections, roundabouts, and other conflict points. Misunderstanding these rules is one of the leading causes of accidents.
At uncontrolled intersections (no signs or signals), the vehicle that arrives first has the right of way. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the one on the right goes first. At T-intersections, traffic on the through road has the right of way.
Special right-of-way situations include yielding to emergency vehicles, school buses with flashing lights, pedestrians in crosswalks, and funeral processions. These scenarios are frequently tested on the DMV exam.
