How to Pass the Georgia DMV Test

Georgia's knowledge test is unique among US states because it is split into two separate sections: 20 Road Rules questions and 20 Road Signs questions, for a total of 40 questions. You must score at least 75% on each section independently — that means 15 out of 20 on both sections. The good news: if you fail only one section, you only retake that section. At just $10 for the permit, Georgia is also one of the cheapest states for new drivers. Here is how to pass.

Study Strategies

  • Study the Georgia DDS Driver's Manual from the Department of Driver Services website (dds.georgia.gov). The manual is divided into Road Rules and Road Signs chapters — study both equally.
  • Treat the two sections as separate tests. Practice Road Signs and Road Rules independently so you can identify which area needs more work.
  • For the Road Signs section, make flashcards of every sign in the manual. Focus on sign shape, color, and meaning — Georgia tests all three aspects.
  • Learn Joshua's Law requirements for teen drivers: 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 40 hours of supervised driving. These details appear on the test.
  • Practice with 20-question tests for each section to match the real format. Many online practice tests combine both sections, which does not match Georgia's actual split format.

Most Commonly Missed Topics

Sign identification by shape and color alone

Georgia's Road Signs section may show you a sign shape without any text and ask what it means. Know that a pentagon (5 sides) means school zone, a round sign warns of a railroad crossing, and a pennant shape indicates a no-passing zone. Color is equally important: red = stop/prohibition, yellow = caution, blue = motorist services.

Georgia's Super Speeder Law

Georgia adds a $200 'Super Speeder' fine to anyone convicted of driving 75 mph+ on a two-lane road or 85 mph+ on any road. This is in addition to the regular speeding fine. This Georgia-specific law is commonly tested.

Blood alcohol limits and zero tolerance

Georgia's BAC limit is 0.08% for adults 21+, but 0.02% for drivers under 21 — stricter than many states. Georgia also has an implied consent law: refusing a chemical test results in a 1-year license suspension.

Right-of-way at intersections and roundabouts

At an uncontrolled intersection, yield to the vehicle on your right. In a roundabout, yield to traffic already in the circle before entering. At a four-way stop, the first vehicle to stop has the right-of-way.

Headlight requirements in Georgia

Georgia requires headlights from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, and when visibility is less than 500 feet. Unlike some states that use 1,000 feet, Georgia's 500-foot visibility threshold is tested.

Emergency vehicle and funeral procession rules

When an emergency vehicle approaches, pull to the right and stop. Georgia's Move Over Law requires changing lanes or slowing down for stopped emergency vehicles. For funeral processions, all vehicles in the procession have the right-of-way, and you cannot cut into a funeral procession.

What to Expect on Test Day

Visit any Georgia DDS Customer Service Center — no appointment is needed. Walk in during business hours, but arrive at least 30 minutes before closing. After your documents are verified and the $10 permit fee is paid, you will take a vision screening.

The knowledge test follows in two parts on a computer terminal. The Road Signs section (20 questions) tests sign recognition by shape, color, and meaning. The Road Rules section (20 questions) tests your knowledge of Georgia traffic laws and safe driving practices. Both sections are untimed. You need at least 15 out of 20 (75%) on each section.

Results are shown per section immediately. If you pass both, you receive your instructional permit (Class CP) that day. If you fail one section, you only retake that section. After a first failure, wait 1 day. After a second failure, wait 7 days.

What to Bring

  • Proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, or permanent resident card)
  • Social Security card
  • 2 proofs of Georgia residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease agreement)
  • Parental consent form (if under 18)
  • Proof of school enrollment (if under 18)
  • $10 instructional permit fee (one of the lowest in the US)

How the Test Is Administered

Georgia's knowledge test is computer-based and taken in person at DDS Customer Service Centers. The test is available in 8 languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, French, and German. The unique two-section format (20 Road Rules + 20 Road Signs) is administered sequentially. Each section is scored independently, and results are shown after each section. There is no time limit. Georgia does not offer online testing.

Managing Test Anxiety

  • Georgia's two-section format actually works in your favor. If you are strong on signs but weak on rules (or vice versa), a failure only costs you one retake — not the entire test.
  • The $10 fee is one of the lowest in the country. If you fail, the financial cost of retaking is minimal. This should reduce the pressure you feel.
  • No appointment is needed — walk in whenever you feel ready. You can even scope out the office ahead of time to familiarize yourself with the location.
  • Focus on the Road Signs section first in your studying. It is the more straightforward section, and confident performance there gives you momentum for Road Rules.
  • Remember: 75% means you can miss 5 out of 20 in each section. That is a full quarter of the questions. You have more margin than you think.
