ProAbout the Florida DMV Test
Florida's Class E Knowledge Exam is one of the longest written tests in the country with 50 multiple-choice questions. You'll need to get at least 40 correct (80%) to pass. The test covers road rules, traffic signs, and Florida-specific driving laws drawn from the Florida Driver's Handbook.
Before you can even take the knowledge test, Florida requires completion of a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course. This 4-hour course covers Florida traffic laws, the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving, and driver attitudes. It's mandatory for all first-time Florida drivers regardless of age.
If you're under 18, you have the option of taking the knowledge exam online through an approved third-party provider, which typically costs around $25. Adults 18 and older must test in person at a county tax collector's office or FLHSMV service center. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though appointments are recommended to reduce wait times.
A notable change as of 2025: Florida now administers the written test in English only. Previously, the exam was available in multiple languages including Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Arabic. This is a significant shift that affects non-English speakers.
Bring your proof of identity, Social Security card, two proofs of residential address, and your TLSAE completion certificate. The Class E license application fee is $48, which covers both the permit and eventual license. If you're under 18, you'll need parental consent.
Florida's test covers a wide range of topics including right-of-way rules, speed limits, DUI laws (Florida has a zero-tolerance policy for drivers under 21), parking rules, school zone regulations, and hurricane evacuation procedures. Pay special attention to Florida-specific rules like the Move Over Law and Florida's point system.
After passing, you'll receive your learner's license. If you're 15, you can drive with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat. At 16, you can get a restricted license with nighttime driving limitations. Full unrestricted privileges come at 18. The best way to prepare is active practice. Start with a free test below.
