About the Written Test

The California DMV written knowledge test is one of the most comprehensive in the country. If you're under 18, you'll face 46 multiple-choice questions and need to get at least 38 correct (83%) to pass. Adults 18 and older take a shorter 36-question version but still need that same 83% score — 30 correct answers.

California administers the test exclusively on touchscreen computer kiosks at DMV offices. There's no paper option and no online testing available. You'll need to schedule an appointment before visiting — walk-ins are generally not accepted. You can book your appointment through the [California DMV website](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/appointments/) or by calling 1-800-777-0133.

One of California's standout features is its language accessibility. The written test is available in over 30 languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Armenian, Hindi, Tagalog, and many more. This makes California one of the most accommodating states for non-English speakers.

Bring your completed DL 44 application, proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security number, and proof of California residency. If you're under 18, you'll also need parental consent and proof of driver education enrollment. The application fee is $38, which is non-refundable even if you fail.

You get three attempts to pass per application. If you're under 18, you must wait 7 days between retakes. Adults can try again the next business day. If you use all three attempts, you'll need to start over with a new application and fee.

The test draws questions from the California Driver Handbook, covering topics like road signs, right-of-way rules, speed limits, DUI laws, and safe driving practices. California has specific rules around school zones, carpool lanes, and smog check requirements that often appear on the test.

Once you pass, you'll receive your instruction permit on the spot. You must hold it for at least 6 months and complete supervised driving practice before you can take the behind-the-wheel driving test. The best way to prepare is active practice. Start with a free test below.
