The HazMat endorsement (H) authorizes you to transport hazardous materials in commercial vehicles. This is one of the most sought-after CDL endorsements because it opens doors to higher-paying freight routes, including fuel tankers and chemical transports. Federal law requires a TSA background check in addition to the written knowledge test.

要求

  • Hold a valid CDL (Class A, B, or C)
  • Pass the HazMat knowledge test at your state DMV
  • Complete a TSA security threat assessment (background check, fingerprinting)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Be at least 21 years old for interstate hauling
  • Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through a registered provider
  • Renew TSA background check every 5 years

考试内容

The HazMat knowledge test typically consists of 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Hazardous Materials section of the CDL manual. You need a score of 80% or higher to pass. Questions cover nine hazard classes, placarding requirements, shipping papers, loading and unloading procedures, emergency response, and the Hazardous Materials Table. HazMat 常见问题

How much does the HazMat endorsement cost?
The HazMat endorsement fee varies by state, typically $10 to $40 for the CDL endorsement itself. The TSA background check costs approximately $86.50 and must be renewed every 5 years. Some states may charge additional processing fees.
How long does it take to get a HazMat endorsement?
After passing the written test, the TSA background check takes 4 to 6 weeks to complete. You cannot transport hazardous materials until the background check clears and the endorsement is added to your CDL. Plan ahead if you need it for a specific job start date.
Do I need ELDT for the HazMat endorsement?
Yes. Since February 2022, the FMCSA requires Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for anyone obtaining a HazMat endorsement for the first time. You must complete training through an FMCSA-registered training provider before taking the knowledge test. This requirement does not apply to renewals if you already hold the endorsement.
What are the nine DOT hazard classes?
The nine classes are: 1) Explosives, 2) Gases, 3) Flammable Liquids, 4) Flammable Solids, 5) Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides, 6) Toxic and Infectious Substances, 7) Radioactive Materials, 8) Corrosives, and 9) Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods. Each class has specific placarding, handling, and segregation requirements.
Can non-U.S. citizens get a HazMat endorsement?
Lawful permanent residents (green card holders) can obtain a HazMat endorsement. However, individuals on temporary visas, including H-1B and student visas, are generally not eligible. The TSA requires U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status to pass the security threat assessment.
